Which floor covering can I use with electric underfloor heating?

Here are a few tips for choosing the right electric underfloor heating for your new floor:

The system specified will depend on the room size and type, if fixed units are present, if a new floor base is being laid or what the existing sub floor is made of and the final floor covering. Electric underfloor heating is compatible with a surprising number of floor coverings from carpet and wood to polished concrete. Heating mats, loose cable and In-screed cable can be used underneath tile and stone to provide floor warming alongside central heating or a primary heat source.

110W and 160W mats are very versatile; if a levelling compound is poured they can be used beneath almost any floor covering.

A levelling compound creates a safe and even base to fit floor coverings onto and helps to spread the heat evenly across the floor surface. Our Combymat system is only suitable for use with laminate and engineered wooden flooring, however if an overlay boards are fitted on top of the Combymat carpet and lino can be used. Loose undertile cable is popular under tiles and stone in bathrooms and kitchens, cable can be laid around fixed furniture and pedestals to provide heat where it is needed and simplify fitting. An In-screed cable avoids any increase in build height and is an ideal system for new developments or renovation projects where the floor is excavated and re-poured.
