Heating for a high flying home
Will Roughton, a local Farmer and owner of property on the former RAF Wainfleet site, approached his electrical distributor to find a heating solution for a sky-high project he’s currently working on.
Mr Roughton is converting a Westland Lynx Helicopter into holiday accommodation for families complete with underfloor heating. The impressive aircraft will sit on the same site as a 1970’s control tower, which has already been renovated by the local entrepreneur.
To keep the interior cosy Heat Mat specified their 150W Combymat System. The heating mats were fitted onto 6mm of foam insulation on top of a 6mm plywood base. The final floor covering will be laminate.
The British Army held a final flypast in January this year for the remarkable helicopters, before decommissioning the Lynx following 40 years of military service. Mr Roughton saw this as an opportunity to continue the legacy of the iconic machine and introduce it to new fans as a unique place to stay.
The Combymat system will heat the 3.3m2 space with a total output of 450W. Heat Mat’s new WiFi enabled touchscreen NGT thermostat will control the heli-heating and allow Mr Roughton to adjust the system remotely to meet guest’s demands.
The cockpit controls will remain in place for visitors and the space will house a bed, sofa, TV and mini fridge creating a self contained glamping pod for helicopter enthusiasts and children to enjoy.

The system was supplied by Heat Mat’s customer 7Core in Skegness and installed by Will Roughton’s team.
