Project: The Beach House, The Kench, Hayling Island

Heat Mat's electric underfloor heating mat system has been installed at the Kench, Hayling Island, recently shortlisted for the 2014 RIBA Manser Medal architecture award.

The goal:

The high-quality 160W heating mats were chosen by Sussex-based Meloy Architects to provide a full heating system for The Beach House, a luxury summer residence on the Kench.

The Kench is the name of the spit of land that forms an inter-tidal inlet (now a nature reserve) on Hayling Island, where this contemporary, private holiday home was built.

The property won a RIBA South regional architecture award in 2013 and is nominated regularly for other prestigious accolades. The holiday home has been designed in the spirit of the original chalets once located in this area, with an open-plan living space and floor-to-ceiling glazing for the extended family to enjoy views over the Kench.

The minimalist chalet features an open plan living area and kitchen. Space is limited in the single storey property, therefore underfloor heating was proposed as the ideal solution to ensure wall space was not 'wasted' on radiators. Another factor was minimising maintenance costs and upkeep when the property is not inhabited.

The architects chose Heat Mat.

The solution:

Heat Mat specified 160W heating mats and an intelligent NGT thermostat, to provide the perfect solution to heat the property, without any compromise on design. Using an underfloor heating system maximises wall space, is in keeping with the minimalist design and also ensures the rooms can be furnished as desired. The mats were very quick to install and easy to cut-and-turn around the architects chosen fixed units.

The result:

Once installed, heating mats require no on-going maintenance whatsoever, and the system can also be set up to provide constant frost protection during the winter. The contemporary open-plan feel of the property is retained with the installation of electric underfloor heating as a hidden heat source.
