18th Edition Wiring regulations
The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations were updated in 2019. They are published by The Institution of Engineering and Technology and form the British Standard for the requirements for electrical installations. The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations cover all installations and it is a legal requirement for electrical work and systems to comply with them.
The standard is BS7671:2018 and there are many different chapters covering everything from basic wiring requirements through to specialist areas such as electrical systems in boats and ice and snow melting systems. Section 753 of the Regulations exclusively covers electric underfloor and ceiling heating, wall heating and extenal ice and snow melting systems - both installation and use.
Section 753 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
Section 753 of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations introduces the requirements for the installation and safe use of electrical underfloor, wall and and extenal heating such as driveway, roof and gutter heating.
The Section introduces many requirements for the design of heating systems and also includes a list of information that the installer of the system must provide to the end user once they have left. All Heat Mat instructions are written to comply with the legislation and support the installer in their obligations for passing on information to the end user. All Heat Mat systems are 18th Edition compliant, and Heat Mat was the first company to list their systems as such.
All installers of electric underfloor heating should ensure that they are aware of the requirements of Section 753, and that the supplier of the heating system confirms the systems are compliant. Installers should also display certain information next to the heating system distribution board or provide documentation about the system and manufacturer to the customer. See page 336 of the regulations for further details.
